As I originally promised, here's a post about a Real restaurant you can go to in conjunction with a sporting event. After watching the Belmont Stakes on Saturday - I did not win though my horse set the pace for the others for more than half the race; TFMJ won $100ish - I met my parents and some friends of theirs at what is becoming my favorite late summer afternoon dining: Barbuto. Barbuto's organic Italian menu changes daily to reflect farmer's market and other seasonal availabilities. The food is light, creative, simple. The wine list is extensive, and the wait staff is happy and knowledgable enough to help. The service is outstanding. And I swear I am not saying these things just because Jonathan Waxman was in the house Saturday. A few weeks ago I had a similarly great experience sans Waxman. I honestly do not think there's a bad dish on Barbuto's menu but I wouldn't recommend their espresso, which is a darn shame given the quality of their desserts. But even if they never remedy the coffee situation, I will still go back. In terms of Scoreboard Gourmet, there's any number of bars with TV's around the corner on Hudson. And the trip to the West Village wouldn't be bad after a day-game somewhere, including the Meadowlands. I'm hungry now thinking about Barbuto's pan fried gnocchi - different sauces depending on vegetables, etc of the day. Barbuto 775 Washington Street New York, NY 212-924-9700
