April 15th is one of the most important days in baseball, and history. On this day in 1947 the Brooklyn Dodgers opened their season with Jackie Robinson at first base. Two years after breaking the color barrier, he was named National League MVP.
Jackie's number, 42, was retired across the majors in 1997 (several players were grandfathered in; Mariano Rivera is the only one left). Robinson Cano, named for Jackie by his father (who was a MLB pitcher), now wears #24 (get it?).
At today's 15 MLB games, for the first time, every player on the Astros, Brewers, Cardinals, Dodgers, Phillies, Pirates, and 56 others (including Mariano and Cano) will wear #42. Anyone in a uniform (player, coach, manager) had the option, by the way. The idea was spawned by Ken Griffey Jr who had asked Commissioner Selig permission to do so.
I do not know what Jackie Robinson's favorite food was, but since SG is about eating and Ebbets Field was in Flatbush, I'm going to say something about Junior's, on Flatbush Avenue. And that thing is...cheesecake is good.
